Q. Does corporate responsibility count?
A. At O2 we want to offer more to society than just mobile communications.
We want to provide innovative, relevant, safe, useful, entertaining and sustainable services that are a valuable part of our customers' lives.
We know our success goes hand in hand with providing exceptional, memorable and profitable experiences of the mobile phone. But it depends, too, on understanding our wider effects on society.
We are a young company with only four years of operations behind us. And we've had the opportunity to approach our business in new ways. From the start, we've aimed to develop a culture of responsibility at O2. Our values - to be bold, clear, open and trusted - put that ethos into our everyday actions. We try to listen to our stakeholders, to act with due care, and to make positive contributions to the world in which we live and work.
We want the things we do commercially to be meaningful to others, so that the people and places we touch benefit from what we do. In that way, our business can help to protect the world's resources and the welfare of the communities we serve.
We want, for example, to address people's concerns about mobiles and health, at the same time as understanding how mobiles are enhancing people's well-being and contributing to their lives.
We encourage everyone at O2 to think carefully about our commitment to this. So, when we make decisions - to erect a mast, dispose of redundant equipment, or sign contracts with our employees, for example - we want everyone in the company to think about, and understand, the social and environmental effects of their actions.
This 'O2 in society' section of our website describes how we go about it and why we believe that a commitment to behaving responsibly makes us a better business.
