Public safety is a main focus for Airwave because it links closely with our customers, the Emergency Services.
Our main activities focus on youth at risk.
In 2006 we selected Child Victims of Crime, the only national police children's charity, as our charity of choice. This project seeks to support children up to the age 16 who have been traumatised by crime. It also aims to educate young people to stay safe and be aware of risks.
O2 Airwave is also involved with the Bolton Lads and Girls Club, supporting the use of an outreach vehicle to help children in deprived areas improve their use of leisure times. Many are youngsters who could become involved in crime or anti-social behaviour.
Airwave has links with the Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service to help reduce the number of fire deaths in the UK. An educational helpline service - 0800 169 1125 - reinforces the message that prevention is the key to firefighting.
Under the banner of our employee volunteering programme Airwave Challenges, we support two main environmental projects:
The National Trust in Stanlow, Cheshire, where we helped to recover a wetland area for public community pleasure and education.
BTCV, a volunteering organisation for environmental conservation. We have provided allotments for low-income families in Rugby and several school projects involving biodiversity education and practical work to upgrade gardens, playgrounds and ponds through this scheme. We continued to build these school partnerships in 2006 and to offer opportunities for more employees to get involved.
