This information addresses current known mobile phone virus attacks - specifically the CABIR Symbian / Bluetooth¹ virus and the Comwarrior MMS virus.
The information within this section is intended to help customers recognise when their mobile phone has been targeted with a virus and advises on measures which should be taken in order to prevent the attack.
Unlike “worms” and viruses on PCs, mobile phone viruses do not self install - the user needs to act proactively to accept and install the software.
With both the CABIR Symbian / Bluetooth virus and the Comwarrior MMS virus, the user therefore needs to download and install the rogue software in order to activate the program.
The Comwarrior virus is the first “successful” virus attack on mobile phones, evidence suggests that a small number of customers have installed Comwarrior on their handsets.
¹ Bluetooth is a technology designed to wirelessly interconnect devices over short range. The most common application in the mobile industry is to connect wireless headsets to mobile phones, but the standards support the interconnection of cameras, printer, laptops and potentially household devices such as TV remote controls
