Latest mobile health research
12 September 2007 – Publication of Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme Report A report summarising the findings of the first phase of Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme (MTHR) was published today, Wednesday 12 September.
The MTHR Report said that none of the research supported by the programme and published so far demonstrates adverse health effects from the use of mobile phones and that in certain areas no further research is required. The Report also notes that measurements of radio wave exposures from mobile phone masts are well below international guidelines. The situation for longer term mobile phone use is less clear and so further research is recommended.
MTHR was established in 2001 by the UK Government to co-ordinate a programme of research into the possible impact on health from mobile phone technology. The research has been conducted by independent scientists at universities and research institutions around the UK. It is funded jointly by the UK mobile industry and the UK Government. The only role for the industry funders is to provide funds to the independent MTHR Secretariat; they have no role in managing any aspect of the programme. The findings of this latest report are consistent with more than 30 independent scientific reviews published in the UK and around the world over the past six years.
