
In October 2004, Telefónica O2 Germany GmbH & Co OHG and Tchibo GmbH launched a new 50/50 joint venture called Tchibo Mobilfunk. It offers a unique and competitively priced pre-paid and post-paid mobile phone service for the German market and combines the marketing and sales distribution strengths of Tchibo with Telefónica O2 Germany GmbH & Co OHG's high quality network infrastructure and track record for innovation in the mobile market.
Tchibo Mobilfunk offers a simple and transparent pricing with customers able to choose from a range of own-branded handsets, available from around 1,000 Tchibo retail stores nationwide, as well as specialist dealer partners and over the Internet. As at 31 March 2008, Tchibo Mobile, whose customers form part of Telefónica O2 Germany GmbH & Co OHG's customer base, had connected 1.2 million customers.
The venture delivers significant benefits to both parent companies. It opens up new target segments in Germany, which is Europe's largest mobile phone market. The new company follows the successful launch of Tesco Mobile, a joint venture between Telefónica O2 UK and Tesco plc.
