Handsets

O2 complies with the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) recommendation on exposure to radio frequency emissions from handsets and the corresponding European standards (EN 50360, EN 50361).

We also adhere to several other government and voluntary commitments.

We publish SAR (specific absorption rate) values – a measure of the amount of radio wave energy absorbed by a person using a mobile.

All the handsets we sell comply with the relevant partial body (head and trunk) public exposure SAR limit of 2 Watts per kilogram.

- SAR values are included in the UK sales brochures for customers and in the user guides packed with all our products.

We have also helped the industry to formulate advice to minimise the possible risk of repetitive strain injury (RSI) from hand movements in text messaging.

Health and the mobile industry

We participate in and co-fund several industry groups.

These include:

  • Mobile Operators Association (MOA) in the UK.
  • GSM Europe (GSME) and the worldwide GSM Association.
  • ETNO Sustainability working group.

O2 takes a prominent role by chairing the GSME Health and Environment Working Group and the UK MOA’s Compliance Working Group.  We are members of the GSM Association’s health policy sub-group and EMF Expert Panel.
