Total electricity consumption 2007 – 419,932,222 kWh1

Total mobile network electricity consumption – 364,677,728 kWh1

18 per cent renewable electricity consumption

Using electricity to run our networks (base stations and switching centres) is our biggest environmental effect. Our networks account for around 85 per cent of electricity consumption: offices, call centres and retail stores account for the rest.

Overall, our absolute electricity consumption has continued to rise, driven by the expansion of our mobile network and a growing number of customers.

Reducing our energy consumption while continuing to grow is a huge challenge. But our strategy to buy electricity from renewable or low-carbon sources means that, despite the rise in consumption, the resulting reported CO2 emissions have remained more or less static. Renewable electricity creates virtually no greenhouse gases.

We will concentrate more and more on buying renewable electricity to ensure we contain or reduce our environmental impact.
