
The O2 Foundation is the cornerstone of community work in the Czech Republic. Its key mission is to support projects that help improve the mental and physical health of children and young people, as well as social and environmental initiatives. It also aims to increase opportunities for people with disabilities.
The O2 Foundation (www.nadaceo2.cz) was first launched in 2002 to co-ordinate all community work.
In 2006 we won eighth place in the Czech Republic’s Top Corporate Philanthropist awards. This followed our special award in 2005 for our work helping to combat bullying – the MIS project www.minimalizacesikany.cz
We operate a payroll giving scheme, in line with Telefónica O2 Europe’s Can Do Giving and Can Do Matching schemes.
Our chosen charities in 2006 were:
• Regional grants programme – We distributed CZK 10 million among 50 non-profit organisations in 2006, including the O2 Foundation Prize for CSK 1.0 million which rewards companies who help drive social change through innovation. In 2006, the winner was Ledovec, which helps young people with psychological problems.
• We also gave a special donation of 1.5 million CZK to Spondea – a special centre for badly treated or abused children which offers constant care to help children in a crisis.
• Battle against bullying at school – We continued our three-year pilot programme called MIŠ – minimalizace šikany (bullying minimisation at schools), investing CSK 3.6 million in 2006.
• Clinic clowns and children in hospitals – We are the main partner of the Clinic Clown association, which brings joy and fun to children suffering from long-term illness. We have a joint project, Line Home, which brings mobile phones to children in hospitals, to enable them to call home free of charge. In 2006 we donated around CSK 800,000 to these causes.
• Employees give a helping hand – In 2006, 188 employees actively participated in O2 Foundation projects. Opportunities included being a member of the regional committes in a regional grant programme, visiting children in hospitals or taking children out for games, sports and entertainment.
In 2004, we helped to create DMS, a text-based fundraising tool that enables our customers to donate to charity speedily and transparently through their mobiles (www.darcovskasms.cz).
