
Spam or scam messages are non-chargeable, unsolicited incoming messages sometimes received from companies promoting services, products, prizes and competitions.
Although it costs nothing to receive spam, a reply can activate an automatic ‘opt in’ to the service, potentially resulting in customers receiving subscription-based premium-rate text messages.
Customers can report spam and scam by forwarding the message to 7726 (applicable in the UK only). O2 will investigate the message and take the necessary action to prevent fraudulent activity.
In February 2006, O2 signed up to the GSM Association voluntary code of practice on mobile spam, which O2 helped to develop.
The Mobile Spam Code of Practice is a new initiative from the GSM Association and its member operators. It seeks to protect the secure and trusted environment of mobile services to ensure customers receive minimal amounts of spam sent via SMS (short message service) and MMS (multimedia messaging service).
The code takes a firm stance on how to deal with mobile spam messages that are illegal, fraudulent or malicious.
