At Manx Telecom – the major supplier of fixed line, mobile and internet services on the Isle of Man – we see our island customers as neighbours.
Our responsibility, under the terms of our 15-year licence from the Isle of Man Government, requires us to provide reliable, speedy and resilient communication services at good value.
We support the Manx ‘e-island’ strategy through a £30.0 million capital investment programme that this year has seen the launch of Europe’s first 3.5G mobile network, faster ADSL broadband and new pricing packages.
Our award-winning Manx Telecomputer bus continues to visit local schools, fitted out as a mobile Internet classroom, with 23 Apple iMacs® and the latest educational software. We sponsor a range of sporting events, including a swim-a-thon, youth cricket and coaching. We also provide work placements in our offices for young people with special needs.
We have followed O2 UK’s initiative by providing help and advice to children who are victims of mobile bullying, and by making our leaflet available on our website and to schools and youth organisations. We also talk to children in local primary schools.
Our employees are involved in payroll giving and other fundraising ideas, but they donate expertise as well. During the year our health and safety manager gave much time to support two local charities, The Hospice and Age concern, creating health and safety manuals for them.
We have succeeded in achieving our targets for mobile phone recycling, with proceeds being used for a local initiative to plant trees in the gardens of the new hospice.
