Our consumption of fuel oil does not make a significant environmental impact.
We use fuel oil in two main ways:
Diesel generators are used only in emergencies or for very short periods of testing, and the consumption is very low.

1 2004/05 data for Manx Telecom and Airwave only. 2005/06 data for Manx Telecom, Airwave and O2 UK only.
2006 data for all businesses except O2 Ireland.

1 Most of the fuel stored is diesel for emergency generators. Manx Telecom, Airwave and Telefónica O2 Czech Republic also
use significant quantities of oil for heating. Telefónica O2 Czech Republic reported that 40 litres of stored oil were lost
through leakages in 2006. No other losses were reported.
2 The four remaining tanks in the UK are ‘day tanks’ which are not required to have secondary protection. As part of our
continual environmental improvement we will reassess the need for further containment of our small day tanks.
Our data collection in this area is improving every year. In 2004, we collected data from Manx Telecom and Airwave; 2005 data includes O2 UK, Manx Telecom and Airwave; and in 2006 the data includes O2 UK, O2 Germany, Telefonica O2 Czech Republic and Manx Telecom, which is why our fuel-oil consumption figures increase every year. They do not reflect an accurate year-on-year comparison trend.
We store diesel fuel at offices and fixed-equipment installations to provide power for emergency generators.
In most of our markets, the diesel is stored wholly in secondary-protected overground tanks.
