Corporate Responsibility report 2005/06

Manx Telecom in the community

At Manx Telecom - the major supplier of fixed line, mobile and internet services on the Isle of Man - we see our customers as neighbours.

Our responsibility, under the terms of our 15-year licence from the Isle of Man Government, requires us to provide reliable, speedy and resilient communication services at good value.

We support the ‘e-island’ through a £30 million capital investment programme that this year has seen the launch of Europe’s first 3.5G mobile network, faster ADSL broadband and new pricing packages.

But we are neighbours to our customers in a broader sense - and our community programme concentrates on the environment and young people, especially those involved with sport or using information technology for educational purposes.

Our award-winning Manx Telecomputer bus continues to visit local schools, fitted out as a mobile Internet classroom, with 23 Apple iMacs® with the latest educational software. We sponsor a range of sporting events, including a swim-a-thon, youth cricket and coaching. We also provide work placements in our offices for young people with special needs.

At Manx Telecom, we have followed O2 UK’s initiative in providing help and advice to children who are victims of mobile bullying. We have produced a leaflet that has been made available on our website and to schools and youth organisations. We are following up by providing talks in local primary schools, and a presence at the Isle of Man College Health Fair which this year has bullying as its theme.

We have succeeded in achieving our targets for mobile phone recycling, with proceeds being split between the Rainforest Concern project and a local initiative to plant trees in the gardens of the Isle of Man’s new hospice, now being built.
