Apart from incidents involving crime, national safety and security, we only intervene to help locate a person when it is a matter of emergency - a matter of life or death.
We have helped emergency services to trace and rescue people who, for example, have called 999 to report a suicide attempt.
Our services have also been used successfully to check that people were safely away from the areas affected by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 and the Asian earthquake in 2005, and to inform people of emergency flights and passages to safety.
