Following a rise in terrorist activity across Europe in 2004 and the increased use of mobile phone traffic data for law enforcement, the EU has proposed new legislation on data retention by communications service providers.
A framework document, proposed in April last year in the UK, will require mobile service providers to keep user data for at least a year.
The Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security (ATCS) act also calls on telecommuniations companies to retain data for a year on a voluntary basis.
In the UK we will keep all mobile data for a year from July 2006 voluntarily. What can be done with any retained data continues to be guided by the Regulation of Investigating Powers Act.
