Your mobile - your health

The calls for further research into the safety of mobile communications continue.

We co-fund a wide range of independent research and we monitor the findings carefully.

The health debate focuses on safe levels of exposure to the radio waves emitted from mobile phones and base stations.

“Having accepted that mobile phone networks, and now the latest communications systems providing data, are a necessary feature in a modern industrial and commercial country, it remains necessary however to understand that this new technology may still be found to have adverse effects which may only become clear after a prolonged period of years of usage of these networks.”

Alan Meyer, legal director, Mast Action UK

Strict international guidelines govern these radio frequency emissions and we make sure we operate safely within the stated limits. We also explain to customers and other interested parties how mobile networks operate, by providing information and advice on the alleged risks.

“...in the UK there is a lack of hard information showing that the mobile systems in use are damaging to health. It is important to emphasise this crucial point…A precautionary approach should continue to be adopted.”

UK National Radiological Protection Board: January 2005
