In 2005/06 we began working closely with key suppliers Nokia and Ericsson to identify ways of reducing long-term energy consumption in our networks.
We also continued to support the work of the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), where we co-chair the supply-chain working group with Motorola. GeSI is a joint initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme, the International Telecommunications Union, and information and communications sector operators and manufacturers. It aims to address social, environmental and ethical issues in the sector.
During the year GeSI worked with an established group of computer manufacturers, who had also developed a supply-chain code of practice. This work has led to the creation of a common supplier self-assessment questionnaire - in English, Spanish and Mandarin - to help companies make checks on issues in relation to labour, health and safety, ethical and environmental issues.
We aim to start using this and other tools in our ethical supply-chain management during 2006.
