We’re in this together

O2 have been asked to be part of something special and really make a difference.

O2 and a select number of other big companies in the UK – including M&S, Tesco, B&Q, BP and Barclays - have been invited to join hands and be part of the We're In This Together campaign, led by Tony Blair and the Climate Group.

The campaign, which kicked-off on 23 April, aims to educate consumers about the different ways they can reduce their carbon usage. We are seeking to lead the mobile industry by launching a new range of products and services designed to help encourage people to reduce the environmental impact of their mobile phone usage.

Our first is the O2 Energy Saver option which will consist of two offers – a delayed upgrade option and a SIM-only tariff. Both will be available from 28 April.

Delayed upgrade optionEnergy Saving trust logo
This option is designed to save the energy used to manufacture and distribute a new handset by incentivising customers not to upgrade at the end of their contract. Pay Monthly customers who decide to opt in to this will be offered a choice of either:

  • The existing £100 of free credit, or
  • £95 of free credit and a £5 donation to the O2 Energy Saver fund

O2 will match every donation, bringing the total donation for each delayed upgrade to £10.

If everyone in the UK who owns a mobile delayed its replacement by a year, it would equate to 187,000 cars being removed from the road annually.

SIM-only tariff
The Energy Saver SIM-only tariff option will be available online and for every customer that signs up we'll make a £5 donation to the O2 Energy Saver fund.

Handset recycling
Our retail stores are also holding a ‘phone amnesty' where customers can hand in unwanted phones. The phones will either be repaired and sold in developing countries abroad or recycled. For every phone received O2 will give £5 to O2 Energy Saver fund.

Where will the money go?
In partnership with the Energy Saving Trust, the donations to the O2 Energy Saver fund will be used to help local communities reduce carbon emissions. The fund will pay for hit squads to deliver improvements to households which are unable to keep their homes warm because of energy inefficiencies.
