2001, August  Text messages take off with Britons sending on average, 1 billion messages a month.

2000, June  First commercial GPRS services and handsets are launched. When using GPRS, charges are based on the volume of data sent and received. You can access around 1000 WAP pages for each megabyte (MB).

2000–2004  Number of minutes spent making mobile calls in the UK almost doubles to 62.0 billion.

1987  Nokia man. 75,000 Britons own mobile phones.

1985  First UK mobile licenses granted to Telecom Securicor Cellular Radio (TSCR) and Racal Vodafone.

1983  Margaret Thatcher makes the first UK mobile phone call on a private use dedicated mobile network. At this time used mostly as in-car phones, analogue phones, typically cost £2,000 per unit to buy.

the 1970's

1978  Bell Labs and AT&T roll-out an analogue based cellular telephone service. Ten cells, covering 21,000 square miles, made up the Chicago system.

the 1900's

1965  AT&T installs the world's first electronic telephone switch (special purpose computer) in a local telephone exchange, Succasunna, NJ.

1950  Mobile phones, due to their large battery sizes, are installed in vehicles.
