Etiquette

O2 encourages its customers to use their mobile phones sensibly, considerately and responsibly.

The convenience of mobile phones does not give users the right to intrude on other people by interrupting films or plays, the enjoyment of restaurants and travel or to disrupt business meetings. Technology now allows mobile phone users to use voicemail, leave texts, mute ring tones or opt for vibrating call alerts.

Tips on mobile phone etiquette can also be found at the GSM Association’s website.

When to switch off

Common sense dictates that you take control of your mobile and switch it off at the cinema, at the theatre, in restaurants, at sporting events, in business meetings, in hospitals and at social or family occasions such as weddings and funerals, where a mobile phone ringing will interrupt proceedings or cause annoyance. If you cannot bear to hit the off button, then switch your phone over to its silent, muted or 'vibration' setting.

Travel tips

If your phone rings on the train, remember where you are and think about what you are saying. Business deals can be blown due to indiscreet conversations - the person sitting opposite could be a competitor. More importantly, have some consideration for your fellow passengers and keep your voice down.

On the road

Today's roads are busier than ever, requiring the highest levels of concentration and control. O2 discourages mobile phone use while driving and urges the proper use of a hands-free mobile phone kit. Our advice is: never use a hand-held phone while driving; only use your mobile phone hands-free and when it is safe to do so. If you do make or receive calls, keep conversations simple - finish difficult calls immediately. For more information on safer driving, download our leaflet.

The business code

Mobiles mean that business people are now more in touch with each other than ever before. But unless used considerately, mobile phones cease to be effective business tools and instead become sources of annoyance. Don't treat your colleague's mobile like an extension. Think about where he or she could be. The first thing you should say to any colleague or business partner when they answer is "Hello, can you talk right now?"

Making the most of messaging

If you choose to turn your mobile off, it does not mean you are out of touch. If you cannot answer a call, send a text message or use voicemail. Remember to check your own voicemails via your mobile and make sure you return those calls.
