Telefónica Europe plc is supporting this year’s ‘Safer Internet Day’. Promoting the safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people.
Around the date of the event, a wide array of activities will take place across Europe and the world, ranging from press-conferences and workshops for children, to rock concerts and seminars for educators and parents.
The main objective of Safer Internet Day 2009 is to bring together relevant public and private stakeholders, in as many countries as possible, to raise awareness about the safe and responsible use of new technologies especially among children and young people.
Safer Internet Day Committees will be set-up in each participating country, with the support of public authorities and involving relevant stakeholders in the field of internet safety (NGOs, industry, researchers).
Since the first event in 2004, participation in this activity has been steadily growing, with an increase in general awareness, stronger involvement of relevant stakeholders in the field of internet safety and a high level of media interest.
In 2008, over 120 organisations in 56 countries took part in Safer Internet Day celebrations, organising local, national and pan-European events ranging from safety sessions in schools and competitions for young people to public meetings and conferences.
In 2009, there is hope for an even larger number of participants in the Safer Internet Day activities, in an even greater number of countries.
